Plot [ edit] In the kingdom of Illyria, second born royal Sam argues against the monarchy with her friend Mike by performing rock music on the streets. Her older sister, Eleanor, is to succeed their mother Catherine to the throne following the death of their father and uncle. While spending the night out with Mike, Sam suddenly begins to experience an over-stimulation of her senses while at an underground concert and gets herself and Mike arrested when she sets off the fire sprinklers. The next day, she is informed by Catherine that she is to take summer school to make up for missing her history test. Sam attends summer school alongside eagerly friendly January, quiet and socially awkward Matteo, conceited and popular Tuma and social networking and pompous Roxana. Their teacher is Professor James Morrow who reveals that they are not there to take summer school, but instead are to be trained to join the Secret Society of Second-Born Royals, a group of superpowered individuals dedicated to protecting the world and serving the various monarchies. Morrow reveals that he has the ability to multiply himself and that Catherine is a member as well, shocking Sam. Catherine tells her that her sister Eleanor is to never know about the Society and Morrow immediately puts them to training. Sam discovers that her heightened senses are the result of her powers awakening. Roxana learns that she can turn invisible, Tuma has mental persuasion, January can take other abilities temporarily and Matteo can control bugs. As they hone their powers, they become closer and begin opening up with Tuma admitting that his powers have resulted in him becoming conceited, Matteo feeling that he has a place where he belongs after feeling ignored, Roxana realizing that there is more beyond having numerous followers and January revealing that she has a twin brother who she feels pressured by due to him being seconds older than her. Meanwhile a prisoner named Inmate 34, escapes and unleashes his telekinetic abilities. After a failed simulation results in Sam missing a gig with Mike, she hangs out with her new friends to cheer her up and prepare for the upcoming coronation. Mike catches Sam hanging out with January and believes that she has abandoned him. Afterwards, Inmate 34 attacks the group and Sam gives chase when he hears him call her "Snowflake", a name only her father called her. A chase in the woods results in Morrow getting severely beaten, but January rescues Sam by taking Inmate 34's powers away. Morrow is hospitalized and Sam demands to see Inmate 34 from Catherine; discovering that he is in fact Edmond, her uncle. He reveals that he killed his brother because he wanted to take down the monarchy and have the people of Illyria be citizens rather than subjects. Sam begins to reevaluate her relationship with Eleanor when it becomes clear that she wants Sam to feel free. The rest of the Society agree to be there for Sam at Eleanor's coronation. However on the day, January is revealed to be in league with Edmond who takes Tuma's powers and releases him. She wants Edmond to kill her brother so that she can take the throne to her kingdom. Matteo manages to send a bee to warn Sam and she recruits Mike, while also apologizing and revealing her secret. Sam and Mike manage to take out January and regroup with the rest of the Society to stop Edmond who plans on using a device that will take out everyone with royal blood. The Society confront him and battle him before trapping him in an experimental miniaturized chamber. The coronation happens with no one aware of the events. Sam, Matteo, Roxana and Tuma are inducted into the Society as Morrow recovers from his injuries. Catherine reveals the Society to Eleanor who promises that her first order as queen will be to add parliament to their government. January has escaped and is now taunting the Society to come and find her and they leave by jet on their next mission. Disney Secret Society of Second Born Royals Directed by Anna Mastro Action, Adventure, Comedy, Family, Fantasy The most polished superpower on display in the defiantly unexciting “Secret Society of Second-Born Royals” is the ability to say its title without spitting. Taking privilege to a whole new level, Anna Mastro’s brainless addition to the superhero genre drops us in a fictional European country where Sam (Peyton Elizabeth Lee), 15, is second in line to the throne. Princess by day and punk rocker by night, Sam is such a populist she reads Hemingway and hangs out with the son of the palace groundskeeper (Noah Lomax). Bundled off to a supersecret training camp where portraits of other rebellious royals — Princess Margaret, Prince Harry — adorn the walls, Sam discovers she possesses an elite gene that skips the heir to bestow supernatural powers on the spare. Alongside a handful of similarly gifted second-borns (the young cast is way better than the material), she learns to control her talents and subdue her prejudices. Like a “Breakfast Club” with invisibility instead of self-loathing. A weird blend of toddler temptations (weaponized butterflies, lots of princesses) and adult politics (anti-monarchist protests, a bomb threat at a coronation), “Second-Born Royals” doesn’t know how to be kid-friendly without being dumb. (“I’m leaving soon, ” one member says, “which means I’m not going to be here. ”) Posh British accents, lame training sequences and an interminable day at the beach fill the screen while the movie’s menacingly stubbly Big Bad (Greg Bryk) awaits his cue to cause mayhem. Cliché-ridden and sequel-ready, this incoherent origin story should proceed, if at all, by exploring those portraits on the Society’s walls. They may not be future monarchs, but these characters are no spare heirs. In fact, they’re each born with super-human abilities that can help them protect their respective kingdoms. If they can harness their powers and learn to work together, it might be their crowning glory. Sam (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) This rebellious teenager is second in line to the throne of the kingdom of Illyria. Rather than attend royal events, she’d rather rock out on her guitar. “Sam has always felt like she’s not only second-born but also second-best—like she never lives up to everyone’s expectations, ” says Lee. “There is a ton of pressure on teenagers to fit a certain mold or to be successful in a certain way, and in addition to all those normal teenage pressures, Sam also has the pressure of an entire country watching her and looking to her to set the right example. And so, she sort of buckles under all that pressure. It’s not until she becomes a member of the Secret Society of Second-Born Royals that she really finds her group of people, finds her place, and figures out how she can use this title that she’s been given for good. ” Sam has been gifted with heightened senses, meaning she can feel, hear, and see things more sharply than the average person. “I think she’s a super relatable character, ” says Lee. “Even though she is a superhero and a princess, the themes of the film and the life lessons Sam experiences are very universal, no matter who you are or how old you are. ” Tuma (Niles Fitch) Tuma is a charmer with the ability to influence people’s actions. When his training begins, Fitch says, “Tuma needs to learn how to work with the team and how to use his power for good, because it’s such a powerful power to be able to control what people do. ” Tuma’s gift reminds Fitch of what Uncle Ben told Spider-Man: “With great power comes great responsibility. ” Throughout the movie, Tuma must work to “understand his power and who he is, ” he adds. “He has to get comfortable and allow other people to take the lead. That’s something I feel like we all have to learn, and that’s exactly what you see Tuma deal with. ” January (Isabella Blake Thomas) With the ability to absorb other people’s powers, bubbly and outgoing January can do pretty much anything she wants. “Exploring her powers was really interesting, because it follows her thinking that she doesn’t know where she fits, ” says Thomas. “She wants to fit in, but she just doesn’t really know where she does. ” Ultimately, “Having that power gave her the ability to overcome something and figure out who she wants to be and who she is. ” Roxana (Olivia Deeble) A social media influencer with 108 million followers, Roxana has no filter. “She’s very full of herself, ” admits Deeble. But once she begins her training with the secret society, she says, “She goes on a discovery of self-love. It’s not just outward; it has to be inward. ” Ironically, Roxana can turn invisible, which Deeble finds hilarious, “since she always loves to be seen. ” Matteo (Faly Rakotohavana) The strong and silent type, Matteo tends to fade into the background—initially, at least. “He is super shy and very awkward. He wants to fit in but he has trouble doing so, because he’s scared of what other people may think of him, ” says Rakotohavana. “His whole arc throughout the film is gaining a sense of confidence and learning to control his powers. ” According to Rakotohavana, “His power is really funny, because it’s literally a reflection of Matteo himself. He can control insects, which might not seem very useful. Like, ‘Ew, bugs! Ew, Matteo! ’ But he learns that just like his insects, he plays an important role in his team. ” James (Skylar Astin) James, a professor and mentor to the new class of second-born royals, has a boyfriend named Henry, an iguana named Jeff, and a severe gluten allergy—but that’s just scratching the surface. “He can multiply, ” says Astin. “He can clone himself and clean a room really fast or he can be a better teacher who gets their ear a little bit easier—and it also comes in handy when fighting crime. ” As his character mentors the five students, Astin adds, “Disney fans are going to go on a wild, fun ride. This movie really emphasizes the importance of teamwork and inclusivity and coming together from different parts of the world against a common enemy. I think that is very palpable right now.
